futrell park in myrtle beach
Phase 1 of the big update to Futrell Park in Myrtle Beach is complete. The park officially opened in early May and is ready for visitors!!! We just paid it a visit and we’re happy to share our good-to-know info.
ADDRESS | 1053 Futrell Drive
HOURS | Park is open from sunrise to sunset. Splash pad will be from 10a–7p, Memorial Day to Labor Day.
location + surroundings
This is a neighborhood park in the heart of a central Myrtle Beach residential area. The city and other partners have invested over $700K to revitalize Futrell Park.
LOCAL CITIZENS | We were at the grand opening of the splash pad and saw and heard from the dozens of local residents who have been in the advising, planning, fundraising and execution of this project. They believe in this park and revitalizing the area. Improving entire communities is a process that takes time but it has to start somewhere.
LOCATION | We know there is some concern over this location. Personally, we’ve been several times and never had safety concerns here. It seems best to go in pairs if worried, in the early morning, and on weekdays, if possible. We addressed this in a little greater depth in this article.
SHADE & GROUND COVER | The park gets a little morning shade, especially on the 2–5 year old play structure. There is a wooded and well-shaded area in the back. It has a few concrete seats for caregivers and kids to take a shade break.
TURF | The park has a new, state-of-the-art synthetic turf. The Myrtle Beach City Gov FB page has this to say about it… “the green playground turf is non-toxic, anti-microbial, non-flammable and cooler to the touch than typical playground turfs. It’s designed to keep the playing surface 20% cooler than usual surfaces, and will last longer.”
WOODED AREA | The back of the fenced in area has some wooded area with some shade. There are a few concrete seats there which will be very appreciated in the hot summer months.
the play structures + swings
PLAY STRUCTURES | It has the typical 2 play structures, one of ages 2–5 and one for 5–12. The one for younger kids gets some nice morning shade (until around 11am). There is one little bridge element where you may need to watch the youngest kids. It has some games, balance elements, climbing, and slides.
The bigger structure for older kids is H–U–G–E! It has 3 levels and the very top level is only accessible through a very unique rope step-climbing element. It made my stomach weak and my kids are not up for it but thrill-seekers will love it.
This play structure does have a ton of climbing elements to it and some fun games. Underneath the play structure is a little shaded space with a seat and more little games.
SWINGS | There is a swing set with 2 bigger kid swings and 2 baby swings.
splash pad
The splash pad is now turned on and will be running from 10a–7p daily, Memorial Day until Labor Day. The splash pad is great –– plenty of water elements and space for kids to run around. We have only been during the Grand Opening so far, so it was very crowded but all kids were still having a great time.
