A Weekend Getaway to Charlotte

August 26, 2025

Charlotte, NC, was great for a quick, family-friendly escape just 3 hours from home.
It had a nice mix of hands-on museums, outdoor adventures, and plenty of kid-approved eats.  It was my very first time in the Queen City, and I know we barely scratched the surface. Here are some fun activities for all ages, children and adults alike!

1. Discovery Place Science
Kids can explore everything from a rainforest habitat to a hands-on maker space. With interactive exhibits like OceanXperience and live shows, it’s the perfect spot to spark curiosity and burn off energy.

2. NASCAR Hall of Fame
Even if you’re not a racing fan, the NASCAR Hall of Fame is fun for all. Families can try out the racing simulators, test their pit crew skills, and learn a little history along the way.

3. Carolinas Aviation Museum
Explore real aircraft, including the famous “Miracle on the Hudson” plane. It’s a smaller museum, making it a manageable, quick stop with younger children.

4. Outdoor Fun at Freedom Park
If the weather is nice, pack a picnic and stop by Freedom Park. Nice playgrounds, shady walking trails, and fields to let the littles run free.

5. Jeni’s Ice Creams
Head to Charlotte’s arts district, NoDa, where you’ll find Jeni’s and other sweet spots perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up.

6. Carowinds (Seasonal)
Carowinds Amusement Park is a must for thrill-seekers – but there’s also Camp Snoopy for little ones. A day pass is around $50 per person.

7. Mama Ricotta’s
An excellent family-friendly restaurant with great chicken parm. Large portions. Definitely order the arancini appetizer and do your best to save room for dessert. Most entrees are around $22.

8. Ovens Auditorium
See a show while you’re in town at this cozy theater. Broadway-quality performances and kid-centric events are happening all the time. Disney on Ice comes to the Ovens from October 2-5, and The Nutcracker begins in November.

What will you explore first?

I will be back in Charlotte in mid-September to attend Panda Fest, one of the largest Asian food festivals in the country (children under 6 are free, and adult tickets are $14). If you decide to pop up to Charlotte, let me know where you went and what you ate!
