Day Trip from Myrtle Beach: BBQ, Murals & Sky Bridges

If you’re looking for a more unique way to spend part of your weekend then we have the perfect day trip itinerary. It involves something that should please the whole family: BBQ, beautiful murals and fun sky bridges.

stop 1: hemingway, sc

This tiny little town has a huge barbeque reputation. I first learned about it from an issue of Garden & Gun magazine. This place as seen the likes of Anthony Bourdain, Hilary Clinton, Sean Brock and Larry the Cable Guy over the years. Scott’s BBQ is more than locally famous, it’s nationally recognized as one of the best BBQ spots in the south.

DID IT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE | Umm, yes, in every way. This place ain’t fancy. Some things to know before you go: there are no indoor tables, you’ll get served a to-go container and plastic silverware, they only accept cash, and the restroom is basically in their storage closet.

WHAT ABOUT THE FOOD | Well, it’s fantastic. We tried the chicken, ribs and pulled pork. I’d rate the ribs and chicken 5/5 and the pork was a solid 4. The sides are very small and limited but the meat is what makes this place shine anyway so just plan to get your fill of that.

stop 2: lake city

Lake City is only a 15-20 minute drive from Hemingway and it’s a place we really enjoy visiting so we routed there next. We’ve written a whole post about Lake City –– read that here.

It’s such a unique town full of artistic charm. There is a lot we still want to explore here so we’ll be back again.

stop 3: lynches river county park

Lynches River County Park was our intended destination for the day. We timed it for a late afternoon arrival because the park was staying open later to showcase their Christmas decorations. We’ll write a full post on this place soon but in case you’re planning on going right away here are a few notes.

SKY BRIDGES | These are so much fun. A series of 4 bridges that extend right off the back of the Nature Center and offer great views of the river below. Such a cool feature and worth the drive alone!

NATURE CENTER | Lots of unique elements! It’s a place worth exploring further and we’ll share more soon.

TRAILS | There are miles of other trails that extend through this 676 acre park. A long section of it is boardwalk that lines the river but after that it continues into the forest and offers educational stations along the way.

AT CHRISTMAS | The park is open late on Dec 10 and 17 to show off their Christmas light display which features lots of animal displays. Vendors are also on site and it’s a fun way to keep celebrating Christmas but also continue enjoying nature.
