heritage shores nature preserve

Heritage Shores Nature Preserve is such a lovely spot in North Myrtle Beach. If you’re thinking about going and want to know what to expect then read on!

ADDRESS: 5611 Heritage Drive, NMB

WHAT IS IT: This is a city park with multiple walking trails on boardwalks and dirt. It has informational placards, picnic tables, and benches.

WHAT TO DO: Walk. Pack a picnic lunch. Read placards. Wade into the water. Watch wildlife.

BEST FOR: It’s not especially stroller friendly but you could probably make it work. The trails also are not very long and they intersect so you can make it longer or shorter, as needed.

tips & good to know info

GETTING THERE | It’s a little twisty to get to because it’s surrounded by the marsh. There is an area for boat launching and fishing right by the parking lot. That is also where the nearest bathrooms are located.

PARKING | Parking is by the Cherry Grove Park and Boat Ramp so it’s a 4 block walk to the entrance of the preserve. Make note of the restrooms here as those are the only ones you’ll encounter at the preserve.

TRAILS INTERSECT | The preserve covers 7 acres but the intersecting nature trails are not very long. I’d estimate less than a mile total. They generally create a big loop you don’t worry about getting lost or missing something. Pick any path and you should end up back where you started.

WHAT YOU’LL SEE | There is plenty to observe here. I was very shocked to see a cactus! There are placards along the trails that detail some of the flora and fauna you’ll find here. There is also a low point to access the water toward the very back of the trails so beware kids will be very tempted to get sandy and wet. There is also a giant sand hill and plenty of old shells to sift through.

IT’S A PEACEFUL PLACE | It’s a quiet, peaceful and not too crowded spot. It’s a great spot for a walk, picnic or just to sit quietly. We usually spend about 45 minutes to an hour exploring here. If you want to extend the trip then here are some other local spots we enjoy.

what else to do

PARKS | There are plenty of parks near but Hill Street is super close but if you want a bigger one and more green spaces to explore then head to NMB Park & Sports Complex.

FOOD | We haven’t dug into the food scene in NMB as much as we should. But we do love hitting up smoothie/juice places while we’re out and Shaka Laka Bowls is close by!
