fun and affordable day trip
from myrtle beach: fort moultrie

Fun day trip idea for you… Fort Moultrie is a small historic site on Sullivans Island. It’s less of a time and financial investment than touring the more popular Fort Sumter and offers much of the same history!

details about fort moultrie

Fort Moultrie | Dating back to 1776 this site has a deep history of protecting Charleston through significant wars for 171 years. The site was decomissioned in 1960 and is now operated by the National Park Service.

ADDRESS | 1214 Middle Street, Sullivans Island; 2 hours from central Myrtle Beach

WHAT TO EXPECT AT FORT MOULTRIE There is a small visitors center, nearby and plentiful parking, and a kids Junior Ranger activity book.

ENTRY | Entry is only $10 per adult (16+) and anyone younger is free. There are several dates when the park is 100% free, see those here.

WATCH THE CARGO SHIPS | One of our favorite parts of visiting was the super close views you can get of cargo ships coming in and out of the port. It is just insane to see the scale of them so close. We got to see two in the time we were there.

ALSO, LOTS OF DOLPHINS | I don’t know if we were there on a particularly active day but there was also lots of dolphins being very active close by. The kids enjoyed watching them for 20 minutes.

WHAT ELSE TO DO NEARBY

SHEM CREEK | Shem Creek has a waterfront area with restaurants and a lovely boardwalk. It’s only a few miles from Fort Moultrie.

LUNCH SPOTS | Pages Okra Grill; Five Loaves Cafe; White Duck Taco; Kid Cashew

ANNIE’S HOT DONUTS | Every time we try to go they’re already closed so time it appropriately!

FORT SUMTER | You can see Fort Sumter from Fort Moultrie. Fort Sumter requires a ferry ride to access and while the fort itself has no entry fee you do have to pay for the ferry which is $37 for adults and $23 for kids. It also only runs at certain times.

OTHER IDEAS IN MOUNT PLEASANT | We also love the Memorial Waterfront area which has a park and pier.
